On Tuesday 23rd June, a group of enthusiastic participants took to the River Thames to enjoy an introductory stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) session, led by our very own Maxine.

The beginner-friendly session welcomed both complete newcomers and those looking to build on previous paddle boarding experiences, offering everyone the chance to develop their confidence on the water in a relaxed and supportive environment.

The afternoon began with a comprehensive land-based introduction, where Maxine guided participants through the equipment, demonstrated how to correctly adjust paddles for individual height, and explained the fundamentals of paddling. The group also learnt about the different paddling positions—sitting, kneeling and standing—as well as essential self-rescue techniques before heading onto the river. These core skills helped ensure everyone felt confident and ready to enjoy their time on the water.

With everyone ready to go, the group launched onto a calm stretch of the Thames for approximately 50 minutes of paddling. Participants were encouraged to progress at their own pace, taking in the peaceful surroundings while putting their new skills into practice. For many, it was their first experience of standing on a paddle board, with plenty of smiles, laughter and growing confidence as the session progressed.

A particular highlight of the evening was a well-earned stop at D’Oyly’s Café on D’Oyly Carte Island, where everyone enjoyed a refreshing ice cream before continuing their paddle.

Maxine’s patient instruction and encouragement ensured everyone felt comfortable, whether they chose to remain kneeling or challenge themselves to stand and experience the unique sensation of “walking on water”.

A huge thank you to Maxine for leading such an enjoyable and informative session, and to everyone who joined us on the water. We look forward to welcoming even more first-time paddlers to future sessions.
